Question – Singing

Question:

Paul encouraged the singing of songs and hymns but Jesus was conspicuously somber with no record of being given to song or even encouraging his disciples to sing. Why the apparent incongruity?

Answer:

It is an interesting question since singing was an important element of Old Testament worship and Paul encourages singing unto the Lord. Jesus was the lamb sacrifice for the sins of the world, fulfilling the Atonement typed in the Old Testament. On that day it was commanded that all the people should “afflict their souls” in observance of the Atonement Sabbath (Lev. 23:26-32). Of course the Lord was well aware of his ministry and mission to be the atoning sacrifice so it was fitting that he lived his life as one afflicted and humble, submitting himself to the will of the Father and resting in the Father’s providence. For him, it was not time for singing. He was the Lamb being led to sacrifice. But in due time he would take his place at the right hand of the Majesty on high receiving the glory and praise due him. The Kingdom will be inaugurated with glorious music which no doubt will fill the halls of Glory forever. For now we sing and make melody in our hearts together by faith knowing that the Kingdom is soon to come.
