Question Baptism

Question:

Why did Paul baptize the Ephesian converts in the name of the Lord Jesus and then refrain from baptizing as his ministry unfolded, stating that he came not to baptize but was sent by Christ to preach the gospel.

Answer:

Paul’s ministry clearly represents the transition from the Old Covenant to the New Covenant. He demonstrates that Christ fulfilled O.T. types, shadows and prophecies conceding the washing of water Baptism as a fit symbol of what he would come to understand as spiritual baptism, the one baptism of  Eph. 4:5. The washing of the priest at the laver of water was only the preparation for atonement which was completed when the high priest entered the Holy of Holies on the other side of the veil where the blood was sprinkled on the mercy seat in God’s presence. Paul’s understanding of baptism followed the same progression culminating in the good news of Jesus Christ i.e., his shed blood sprinkled on the heavenly mercy seat providing atonement for those who would believe. The veil was torn down at the crucifixion of Christ. We now have access to the Holiest by the blood of Jesus. Read Carefully Hebrews 9:6-10 and 10:19-22. Note in v.10 of Chapter 9 that “various baptisms” is mentioned as being imposed until the time of reformation. Everything leading up to the sacrifice of Jesus were shadows. He is the substance, so Paul admonishes the Colossians not to subject themselves to regulations according to doctrines and commandments of men. (Col. 2:15-23)
