Question Names of God and God as a word.

Question:

We were discussing the names of God and began discussing God as the word. And went into the trinity and how the Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit can be the same but separate. So our question is can you explain how it works.

Answer:

I don’t believe the creed writers did us any favors by formulating the trinity doctrine. Instead of adding clarity to our understanding of God, they wrapped sophistry around what Paul called a mystery. (1 Tim. 3:16) An unrevealed mystery by definition cannot be defined and any attempt to explain what God Himself does not explain will certainly be a vain attempt and result in confusion and error. I believe it’s for better to let the word speak for itself on the question of the Godhead. Consider the following portions of scripture and be content with enough knowledge to rejoice in the Lord but not enough to have him figured out or intellectually defined.

–        1 Tim. 3:16

–        John 1:1-3,18

–        Col. 1:15-18

–        Heb. 1:1-3

–        Col. 4:4

–        Eph. 4:4-6

These are but a few scriptures that speak of the mystery of the Almighty God in Christ. Let them suffice with us as they did with Paul.
